The Emerging Technologies Pavilion will present, in concentrated form, concepts and technologies certain to play dominant roles throughout NPE2009:

• Sustainability. Anchor: U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
  This concept encompasses using renewable resources, minimizing the environmental impact of processes and products, eliminating waste and marketing responsibly.



• Bioplastics. Anchor: U.S. Dept. of Agriculture's Office of Technology Transfer
  This fast-developing field will be amply represented on the exhibit floor and in conferences such as SPE's ANTEC. Among exhibitors of new technologies will be the founding member companies in SPI's new Bioplastics Council, dedicated to the development of bioplastics as an integral part of the plastics industry. Biopolymers are produced from starch, vegetable oils and other naturally occurring substances, and many are biodegradable or compostable. Also on exhibit will be additives, colorants and processing equipment specifically developed for use with bioplastics.



• Energy. Anchor: the U.S. Dept. of Energy's Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy
  This broad category of technologies will include: alternative systems based on renewable energy sources like solar and wind; energy conservation through light-weighting, insulation and other design innovations; and energy efficiency in plastics processing.



• Nanocomposites. Anchor: the Center for Multifunctional Polymer Nanomaterials and Devices
  By incorporating exceedingly tiny filler particles and microstructures such as carbon nanotubes into standard plastics, manufacturers create materials with dramatically improved properties for applications as diverse as automotive, electronics and packaging. Nanotechnology will be the focus of an entire session of papers at ANTEC, and among NPE2009 exhibitors will be suppliers of "nano" compounds and fillers, as well as compounding equipment tailored to processing these materials.

International Plastics Design Competition

The first-ever International Plastics Design Competition is not to be missed! Check out prize-worthy new products from all plastics end-use markets around the world. Designers and manufacturers of components and finished products will display their most innovative achievements in bio-process systems, innovative packaging applications and medical products, sustainability, nanotechnology, energy efficiency and bio-based materials. Hosted by SPI's Alliance of Plastics Processors, the International Plastics Design Competition will generate buzz and then some in Technology Central@NPE2009.
