10:30AM
Topic: HDPE: A Sustainable Choice for Water Distribution Pipe
Presenter: Jason Brodil, The Dow Chemical Company, Emerging Technologies Pavilion

According to the American Water Works Association (AWWA), the U.S. water infrastructure is crumbling, literally, as an estimated 2.5 billion gallons of treated water are lost daily due to aged pipes that have corroded, cracked or collapsed. High density polyethylene (HDPE) water distribution pipe can provide a leak-free solution due to its seamless heat fusion connection instead of joints. Corrosion or contaminant infiltration issues are practically non-existent with HDPE, and its flexibility enables trenchless installation. When assessing sustainability, HDPE is energy-efficient to manufacture, transport and install, making it a preferred solution for water distribution pipe. Details on HDPE pipe production, installation and case studies will be presented.

11:00AM
Topic: Packaging: A Tool for Sustainability
Presenter: Jeff Wooster, The Dow Chemical Company, Emerging Technologies Pavilion

Packaging has recently fallen victim to public attacks as something that is a burden on society. Armed with little or no knowledge of the benefits that packaging provides to society, attackers are grabbing headlines by proposing emotion stirring initiatives rather than making decisions based on solid scientific principles. Packaging is often viewed only in terms of the visual cues received when a consumer sees a bag or bottle or wrapper in the garbage can. The consumer never sees the benefits that result from preventing food spoilage and avoiding damage to merchandise. By using scientific principles and taking a comprehensive lifecycle view of the systems used for the distribution of packaged goods, we can better understand how packaging helps us improve the sustainability of our lifestyle. Packaging can help us save energy, reduce waste, and protect our environment for future generations.

11:30AM
Topic: New Polyolefin Rigid Packaging Technologies Driving Sustainability
Presenter: Terry Glass, The Dow Chemical Company, Emerging Technologies Pavilion

New developments in Polyolefin resin design and fabrication processes continue to demonstrate the value that plastics can bring to the packaging industry. Improvements in polyolefin functional properties such as ESCR resistance and higher modulus properties are resulting in lighter weight packaging while maintaining necessary functional performance and shelf life for various products. Efforts with polymer design and developments in novel foam technologies are evolving quickly and yielding results to lightweight containers by 20% from where we were just two years ago. An overview of several new technologies will be presented for applications such as thermoformed and blow molded containers.

3:00PM
Topic: Building an rPET ‘locavore’ business model
Presenter: Lori Carson, Phoenix Technologies International, Emerging Technologies Pavilion

Phoenix Technologies International, LLC will show a process technology that will support our vision of the recycling future of “consume, collect, convert” locally. This technology allows economically viable conversion of recycled plastic (currently PET) into food grade resin at smaller volumes. These volumes are low enough that the raw material could be supplied through local collection of recycled plastic in medium density population centers and potentially supply the resulting resin back into those same population centers. The conversion line would have relatively low energy use, and have a very small footprint allowing it to be married to either a downstream or upstream part of the process. By allowing conversion to be supplied from local areas, one will eliminate the environmental impact (and economics) of the logistics that come with supplying larger conversion plants from more diverse locations.
